Zündapp was an important German motorcycle manufacturer founded in 1917 in Nuremberg by means of Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG along with the machine tool manufacturer Thiel underneath the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau Grams. m. b. H. " as a manufacturer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau is usually German for Igniter and Apparatus). In 1919, as the demand for weapons parts declined soon after WWI, Neumeyer became the sole proprietor with the company, and two years later he diversified to the construction of motorcycles.Following WWII, Zündapp expanded into your microcar, moped and Scooter (bike) markets. The very first Zündapp motorcycle was this model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle pertaining to everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was produced in large series. Zündapp's history of heavy motorcycles began in 1933 with all the K-series. The "K" refers to the kind of drivetrain that these products used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft using two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (then a novelty). The series encompassed models from 200 to 300 cc displacement and was a major success, increasing Zündapp's market talk about in Germany from 5% with 1931 to 18% with 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 hp (21 kW) flat opposed twin cylinder electric motor with overhead valves displacing 597 cc (36. 4 cu in). The KS600 was often coupled with a Steib sidecar, the BW38 (Beiwagen 1938). The BW38, fitted with the B1 (Boot no. 1) sidecar system was produced between 1938 and also 1941 and supplied exclusively on the Wehrmacht. While the KS600 was discontinued and finally replaced by the purpose-built KS750, its motor was to become the only remnant to live on beyond the destruction associated with war. When Zündapp returned to motorcycle production within the late 1940s, it chose to recycle the KS600's motor to power the KS601 with few modifications.The Zündapp K800 experienced unit construction, flat-four engines with shaft drive (a layout adopted by Honda for the Gold Wing in 1974) and were the only real 4-cylinder machines used from the German armed forces inside WWII.

Coming from 1931 Ferdinand Porsche in addition to Zündapp developed the prototype Automobile für Jedermann ("car regarding everyone"), which was the very first time that the name Volkswagen had been used. Porsche preferred the 4-cylinder level engine, but Zündapp used some sort of water-cooled 5-cylinder radial serps. In 1932 three prototypes were running. All three cars were lost through the war, the last in any 1945 Stuttgart bombing raid.From 1936 to 1938 Zündapp produced the KKS500 model. This was the first Zündapp which has a foot gear change, and 170 examples were being built. From 1940 onward Zündapp produced in excess of 18, 000 units of this Zündapp KS 750. This is a sidecar outfit with a driven side wheel and a locking differential, supplied to the German Wehrmacht.Zündapp also made aircraft engines including the 9-092, which was used throughout light aircraft, including the Brunswick LF-1 Zaunkönig (1942) belly initio trainer aircraft.

After WWII the company transitioned to smaller equipment, notably the "Bella" engine scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine due to the type. In 1951 Zündapp released a final of its heavy bike models, but one of its most well-known: the KS601 (your "green elephant") which has a 598 cc two-cylinder powerplant. From 1957 to 1958 this company also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar.In 1958 the company moved from Nuremberg to be able to Munich. Subsequently, the company developed numerous new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines in support of produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some achievement in motorsports with participant André Malherbe winning this 125cc European motocross titles in 1973 and again in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds sold well, but later sales decreased and in 1984 the corporation went bankrupt and shut down.

After the bankruptcy, the entire production range and intellectual properties was bought by Xunda Powerplant Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp bicycles from 1987 till earlier 1990s. Zündapp is still operational, but makes Honda centered 4-stroke motorcycles and electric powered mopeds.Zündapp also had a technical collaboration with Regal Enfield (India) to build mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory has been built at Ranipet near Chennai in the early 1980s to produce small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered with their flagship Royal Enfield Topic. Enfield launched two 50 cc motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus and also the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (based on Zündapp KS175) was introduced as a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake as well as a sleeveless hard chromed canister barrel, all were a first with a motorcycle in that country.
