Zündapp was an important German motorcycle manufacturer created in 1917 in Nuremberg simply by Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG and also the machine tool manufacturer Thiel beneath the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau Gary. m. b. H. " as a manufacturer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau can be German for Igniter along with Apparatus). In 1919, as the demand for weapons parts declined after WWI, Neumeyer became the sole proprietor of the company, and two years later he diversified in to the construction of motorcycles.Following WWII, Zündapp expanded into the actual microcar, moped and Scooter (street bike) markets. The 1st Zündapp motorcycle was the model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle regarding everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was manufactured in large series. Zündapp's history of hefty motorcycles began in 1933 while using the K-series. The "K" refers to the kind of drivetrain that these versions used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft having two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (a novelty). The series encompassed designs from 200 to 400 cc displacement and was a major success, increasing Zündapp's market share in Germany from 5% inside 1931 to 18% with 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 horsepower (21 kW) horizontally opposed twin cylinder generator with overhead valves displacing 597 closed circuit (36. 4 cu in). The KS600 was often in addition to a Steib sidecar, the BW38 (Beiwagen 1938). The BW38, fitted with the B1 (Trunk no. 1) sidecar entire body was produced between 1938 and also 1941 and supplied exclusively towards the Wehrmacht. While the KS600 was discontinued and ultimately replaced by the purpose-built KS750, its motor was to get the only remnant to call home beyond the destruction connected with war. When Zündapp returned to motorcycle production inside late 1940s, it chose to recycle the KS600's motor in order to power the KS601 having few modifications. The Zündapp K800 had unit construction, flat-four engines with the whole length drive (a format adopted by Honda for that Gold Wing in 1974) and were the one 4-cylinder machines used by the German armed forces within WWII.

By 1931 Ferdinand Porsche and Zündapp developed the prototype Auto für Jedermann ("car regarding everyone"), which was the very first time the name Volkswagen had been used. Porsche preferred the 4-cylinder smooth engine, but Zündapp used a water-cooled 5-cylinder radial motor. In 1932 three prototypes ended up running. All three cars were lost through the war, the last in the 1945 Stuttgart bombing raid. From 1936 to 1938 Zündapp generated the KKS500 model. This was the first Zündapp that has a foot gear change, and 170 examples were built. From 1940 onward Zündapp produced more than 18, 000 units of the actual Zündapp KS 750. This is a sidecar outfit which has a driven side wheel plus a locking differential, supplied to the German Wehrmacht.Zündapp also made aircraft engines like 9-092, which was used with light aircraft, including the Brunswick LF-1 Zaunkönig (1942) abs initio trainer aircraft.

After WWII the company transitioned to smaller equipment, notably the "Bella" motor scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine because of its type. In 1951 Zündapp released the final of its heavy street motorcycle models, but one of its most famous: the KS601 (this "green elephant") that has a 598 cc two-cylinder engine. From 1957 to 1958 this company also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar. In 1958 the organization moved from Nuremberg to be able to Munich. Subsequently, the company developed many new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines in support of produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some success in motorsports with rider André Malherbe winning this 125cc European motocross championships in 1973 and yet again in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds offered well, but later sales diminished and in 1984 the organization went bankrupt and shut down.

After the bankruptcy, the entire production series and intellectual properties seemed to be bought by Xunda Electric motor Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp cycles from 1987 till early 1990s. Zündapp is still running a business, but makes Honda centered 4-stroke motorcycles and power mopeds.Zündapp also had the technical collaboration with Regal Enfield (India) to develop mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory has been built at Ranipet near Chennai in the early 1980s to produce small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Bullet. Enfield launched two 50 closed circuit motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus plus the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (based on Zündapp KS175) was introduced as being a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake plus a sleeveless hard chromed canister barrel, all were a first over a motorcycle in that state.
