The very first Zündapp motorcycle was the actual model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle intended for everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was manufactured in large series. Zündapp's history of major motorcycles began in 1933 with all the K-series. The "K" refers to the drivetrain that these designs used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft together with two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (then the novelty). The series encompassed models from 200 to 400 cc displacement and was a serious success, increasing Zündapp's market write about in Germany from 5% within 1931 to 18% throughout 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 hp (21 kW) flat in a trench opposed twin cylinder engine with overhead valves displacing 597 closed circuit (36. 4 cu in). The KS600 was often coupled with a Steib sidecar, the BW38 (Beiwagen 1938). The BW38, fitted with the B1 (Shoe no. 1) sidecar body was produced between 1938 along with 1941 and supplied exclusively on the Wehrmacht. While the KS600 was discontinued and finally replaced by the purpose-built KS750, its motor was to get the only remnant to live on beyond the destruction connected with war. When Zündapp returned to motorcycle production from the late 1940s, it chose to recycling the KS600's motor to be able to power the KS601 with few modifications. The Zündapp K800 had unit construction, flat-four engines with base drive (a design adopted by Honda for the Gold Wing in 1974) and were really the only 4-cylinder machines used because of the German armed forces with WWII.

From 1931 Ferdinand Porsche in addition to Zündapp developed the prototype Automotive für Jedermann ("car pertaining to everyone"), which was the very first time the name Volkswagen was used. Porsche preferred the 4-cylinder level engine, but Zündapp used any water-cooled 5-cylinder radial serp. In 1932 three prototypes were being running. All three cars were lost in the war, the last in the 1945 Stuttgart bombing raid. From 1936 to 1938 Zündapp created the KKS500 model. This was the first Zündapp with a foot gear change, and 170 examples were built. From 1940 onward Zündapp produced more than 18, 000 units of the particular Zündapp KS 750. This is a sidecar outfit which has a driven side wheel as well as a locking differential, supplied to the In german Wehrmacht.Zündapp also made aircraft engines like 9-092, which was used within light aircraft, including the Brunswick LF-1 Zaunkönig (1942) ab initio trainer aircraft.

After WWII the business transitioned to smaller models, notably the "Bella" powerplant scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine to its type. In 1951 Zündapp released the last of its heavy bike models, but one of its most well-known: the KS601 (the "green elephant") which has a 598 cc two-cylinder serps. From 1957 to 1958 the business also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar. In 1958 the company moved from Nuremberg to Munich. Subsequently, the company developed numerous new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines and only produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some good results in motorsports with biker André Malherbe winning the particular 125cc European motocross titles in 1973 and once more in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds offered well, but later sales decreased and in 1984 this company went bankrupt and sealed.

Following the bankruptcy, the entire production collection and intellectual properties was bought by Xunda Powerplant Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp motorbikes from 1987 till the early 1990s. Zündapp is still operating, but makes Honda centered 4-stroke motorcycles and energy mopeds.Zündapp also had some sort of technical collaboration with Noble Enfield (India) to construct mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory was built at Ranipet near Chennai inside early 1980s to make small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Topic. Enfield launched two 50 closed circuit motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus along with the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (based on Zündapp KS175) was introduced to be a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake and a sleeveless hard chromed cylinder barrel, all were a first on the motorcycle in that nation.
