Zündapp was an important German motorcycle manufacturer created in 1917 in Nuremberg by Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG plus the machine tool manufacturer Thiel within the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau G. m. b. H. " as a developer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau is German for Igniter along with Apparatus). In 1919, as the demand with regard to weapons parts declined right after WWI, Neumeyer became the sole proprietor with the company, and two years later he diversified to the construction of motorcycles.Following WWII, Zündapp expanded into the actual microcar, moped and Scooter (motorcycle) markets. The first Zündapp motorcycle was the actual model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle for everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was manufactured in large series. Zündapp's history of major motorcycles began in 1933 while using K-series. The "K" refers to the sort of drivetrain that these designs used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft having two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (then the novelty). The series encompassed models from 200 to 300 cc displacement and was a significant success, increasing Zündapp's market share in Germany from 5% throughout 1931 to 18% inside 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 hp . p . (21 kW) width wise opposed twin cylinder motor with overhead valves displacing 597 cc (36. 4 cu in). The KS600 was often in conjunction with a Steib sidecar, the BW38 (Beiwagen 1938). The BW38, fitted with the B1 (Start no. 1) sidecar system was produced between 1938 as well as 1941 and supplied exclusively towards the Wehrmacht. While the KS600 was discontinued and eventually replaced by the purpose-built KS750, its motor was to become the only remnant to reside beyond the destruction involving war. After WWII the corporation transitioned to smaller equipment, notably the "Bella" generator scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine because of its type. In 1951 Zündapp released one more of its heavy street bike models, but one of its most well-known: the KS601 (this "green elephant") with a 598 cc two-cylinder serp. From 1957 to 1958 the organization also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar.In 1958 the company moved from Nuremberg to Munich. Subsequently, the company developed a number of new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines and only produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some success in motorsports with participant André Malherbe winning the actual 125cc European motocross competition in 1973 and yet again in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds sold well, but later sales declined and in 1984 the corporation went bankrupt and finished.

Following the bankruptcy, the entire production series and intellectual properties seemed to be bought by Xunda Generator Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp motorcycles from 1987 till earlier 1990s. Zündapp is still in operation, but makes Honda primarily based 4-stroke motorcycles and electric powered mopeds.Zündapp also had a new technical collaboration with Noble Enfield (India) to create mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory was built at Ranipet near Chennai in the early 1980s to production small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Round. Enfield launched two 50 closed circuit motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus plus the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (dependant on Zündapp KS175) was introduced as being a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake and a sleeveless hard chromed cyndrical tube barrel, all were a first with a motorcycle in that country.
