Zündapp was a serious German motorcycle manufacturer started in 1917 in Nuremberg through Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG and the machine tool manufacturer Thiel underneath the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau H. m. b. H. " as a producer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau is usually German for Igniter and Apparatus). The primary Zündapp motorcycle was this model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle with regard to everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was produced in large series. Zündapp's history of weighty motorcycles began in 1933 with all the K-series. The "K" refers to the drivetrain that these products used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft along with two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (then the novelty). The series encompassed types from 200 to 800 cc displacement and was a major success, increasing Zündapp's market share in Germany from 5% inside 1931 to 18% in 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 h . p . After WWII the corporation transitioned to smaller machines, notably the "Bella" motor scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine for its type. After the bankruptcy, the entire production brand and intellectual properties seemed to be bought by Xunda Powerplant Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp cycles from 1987 till earlier 1990s. Zündapp is still operating, but makes Honda based 4-stroke motorcycles and energy mopeds.Zündapp also had some sort of technical collaboration with Regal Enfield (India) to create mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory ended up being built at Ranipet near Chennai within the early 1980s to manufacture small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Topic.
