Zündapp was a major German motorcycle manufacturer created in 1917 in Nuremberg by Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG along with the machine tool manufacturer Thiel within the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau Grams. m. b. H. " as a developer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau is actually German for Igniter along with Apparatus). In 1919, as the demand for weapons parts declined immediately after WWI, Neumeyer became the sole proprietor with the company, and two years later he diversified in the construction of motorcycles.Following WWII, Zündapp expanded into the microcar, moped and Scooter (motorcycle) markets. The primary Zündapp motorcycle was the model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle for everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was produced in large series. Zündapp's history of weighty motorcycles began in 1933 with all the K-series. The "K" refers to the type of drivetrain that these versions used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft together with two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (then the novelty). The series encompassed products from 200 to 900 cc displacement and was a significant success, increasing Zündapp's market share in Germany from 5% inside 1931 to 18% throughout 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 horsepower (21 kW) width wise opposed twin cylinder electric motor with overhead valves displacing 597 closed circuit (36. 4 cu in). The KS600 was often along with a Steib sidecar, the BW38 (Beiwagen 1938). The BW38, fitted with the B1 (Boot no. 1) sidecar body was produced between 1938 and 1941 and supplied exclusively towards Wehrmacht. While the KS600 was discontinued and finally replaced by the purpose-built KS750, its motor was to get the only remnant to live on beyond the destruction of war. When Zündapp returned to motorcycle production inside late 1940s, it chose to reuse the KS600's motor to power the KS601 using few modifications.The Zündapp K800 experienced unit construction, flat-four engines with canal drive (a format adopted by Honda to the Gold Wing in 1974) and were the only real 4-cylinder machines used by the German armed forces in WWII.

From 1931 Ferdinand Porsche along with Zündapp developed the prototype Vehicle für Jedermann ("car with regard to everyone"), which was the very first time that the name Volkswagen has been used. Porsche preferred the 4-cylinder ripped engine, but Zündapp used the water-cooled 5-cylinder radial powerplant. In 1932 three prototypes were running. After WWII the corporation transitioned to smaller models, notably the "Bella" generator scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine for its type. In 1951 Zündapp released the last of its heavy motorcycle models, but one of its most well-known: the KS601 (the "green elephant") having a 598 cc two-cylinder powerplant. From 1957 to 1958 the organization also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar.In 1958 the organization moved from Nuremberg in order to Munich. Subsequently, the company developed a number of new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines and only produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some achievement in motorsports with rider André Malherbe winning the 125cc European motocross competition in 1973 and again in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds marketed well, but later sales diminished and in 1984 the corporation went bankrupt and sealed.

After the bankruptcy, the entire production range and intellectual properties seemed to be bought by Xunda Engine Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp bicycles from 1987 till early 1990s. Zündapp is still running a business, but makes Honda primarily based 4-stroke motorcycles and electric powered mopeds.Zündapp also had the technical collaboration with Noble Enfield (India) to construct mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory seemed to be built at Ranipet near Chennai from the early 1980s to make small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Topic. Enfield launched two 50 cc motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus along with the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (depending on Zündapp KS175) was introduced to be a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake along with a sleeveless hard chromed canister barrel, all were a first with a motorcycle in that state.
